A Stroll Through the Mind of MLK

In Dr. Martin Luther King’s speeches “Letter from Birmingham Jail” and “I Have a Dream” he attempts to make the people who believe in racial injustice that things around the world need to change for the better. To do this he uses multiple rhetorical devices which can successfully compare the two speeches together to create emphasis, emotion, and to get his point across. King uses the word “W hen” twelve times within one paragraph in “Letter from Birmingham Jail.” He uses “When” to describe the actions that have taken place and are needed to take place immediately after their nonviolent protests. “When you have seen vicious mobs lynch your mothers and fathers at will” (378). The lynching and illegal acts brought upon African-Americans needs to come to a stop.“When you take a cross-country drive and find it necessary to sleep night after night in the uncomfortable corners of your automobile because no motel will accept you”(379). We shouldn’t have to endure not getting a good night 's sleep because we aren’t accepted due to the color of our skin. He also uses “One hundred years later” repetitively in his “I Have a Dream” speech which states how long it has been going on and how urgent it is to stop this trend. “One hundred years later, the Negro still is not free” (26), “One hundred years later, the Negro is still languished in the corners” (26), “One hundred years later, the negro…
