1. In what way will the culture of Spain be different from that of the United States? In answering this question, refer to Figures 4–5, 4–6, and 4–7.
In answering this question I will use the dimensions that Geert Hofstede identified to attempt to provide a composite picture of the cultures. The four dimensions Geert Hofstede examined were power distance, uncertainty avoidance, individualism and masculinity (Luthans & Doh, 2012). Being given negative information will also not be easy for the Spaniards and managers may need to watch carefully for signs of problems. The American society is what one would describe as “uncertainty accepting” scoring a 46 on this dimension. “Life must go on” (Luthans & Doh, 2012) is a key phrase in America where although there is uncertainty most people are will to take the risk to get the reward. Organizations “encourage personnel to use their own initiative and assume responsibility for their actions.”(Luthans & Doh, 2012) Where Americans are uncertainty accepting the Spaniards, with a score of 86, is uncertainty rejecting. People like to have rules for everything as change causes stress. Stress is something avoided if at all possible. Where in America there are times that management may want to throw ideas on the wall to see what sticks, like spaghetti, Spaniards want a clear cut idea of what is expected and how it is expected to be done. The United States scores a 91, the highest on the chart, for Individualism. In the United States everyone is expected to look after their self and their immediate family. In a business setting this translates into a culture that is very mobile and does not have a problem approaching others in order to obtain or seek information.
