The film, “A Beautiful Mind”, directed by Ron Howard, is based on a true story about a mathematician who overcomes a dreadful mental disorder known as schizophrenia. The disability that the main character, John Nash, is faced with serves as a barrier when dealing with things in everyday life. Nash’s fortitude, intellect and determination help in overcoming his illness though. “A Beautiful Mind” depicts a message to society, concentrating specifically on how one defines reality and imagination. The film accurately depicts the day to day life of someone with schizophrenia because it shows the constant struggle between what is real and what is not and how normal social situations are handled. Nash’s disorder leads to him believing that he worked for a department of defense agent name William Parcher. The schizophrenia makes him also believe that William Parcher is a real person and in return he does everything that the man tells him to do. John Nash begins to face paranoia and causes for his behavior to take a turn for the worst. Nash also starts to lash out and become very ill-tempered due to the anxiety William brings to him. On top of imagining William Parcher, there are two other made-up characters, Marcee and Charles that were incorporated with his hallucinations. These symptoms directly relate to the way he handles social situations.
Schizophrenia also causes a person to have trouble dealing with normal social situations. As seen in the film, Nash begins to have trouble interacting properly with others. The film shows the struggle John has with social situations which in most cases schizophrenics do. In the film, Nash states, “Alicia, does our relationship warrant long-term commitment? I need some kind of proof, some kind of verifiable, empirical data.” (“A Beautiful Mind”). John’s disorder progressively gets worse as the story goes on causing him to be admitted into a mental institution. While at the institution John is forced to go through a series of insulin shock therapy sessions and to be put on several other medications.
